Darcy sank into the great library chair that had been his father’s — and his grandfather’s — favourite. It would soon need re-covering again, he knew. But, even then, it would still be a haven and a memory of the solidity and permanence of Pemberley and his family’s life here.

He lifted the pile of letters waiting for his attention. There were warring feelings within him. While it was a disappointment that he’d have to remain here at Pemberley for at least an extra day; he nevertheless also loved his home. Staying here was always a pleasure over being in London.

He’d been disappointed to find that Mr. Brokenshire was away from home until late tomorrow afternoon. It would be rude to call on him in the evening when he had just returned home, so he would have to content himself with calling on Wednesday morning.

Even assuming he got all the information he required, he still could not possibly return to Matlock House until late on Friday, and it might well stretch for further days, if more evidence came to light as a result of his interview.

He leafed through the letters and chose the one from Richard first. His cousin must have written it the day after Darcy had left London, and it had followed him here.

Perhaps he had some further ideas for the line of questioning Darcy ought to pursue.

Darcy,

I hope you have arrived safely by the time this letter reaches you and that perhaps you have been able to identify your man.

I only wished to let you know that things in this house continue to be very much better than I could ever have dreamed of. Miss Bennet has done wonders with Rachel, and I cannot believe how much improved she is.

Today, we all repaired to the garden, and she stood beside Miss Bennet and we were rolling balls along the lawn to each other. It was wonderful to hear her laughing.

Miss Bennet joined us downstairs for dinner, and it was apparent to me how good her presence is for Georgiana also, who seems to be coming out of the period of reticence and fear she has shown since Ramsgate. The fact that she was willing to share her experience with Miss Bennet, as you explained to me, shows how remarkable that lady is in gaining the trust of others.
